This module has been designed to provide you with an introduction to the Automatic Identification System (AIS).
The AIS is a Very High Frequency (VHF) radio broadcasting system that enables AIS-equipped vessels and shore-based stations to send and receive information that identifies them, which can then be displayed on a computer or chart plotter.
After completing this module, you will have a better understanding of:
- what AIS is and how it works
- shipborne Automatic Identification System (AIS) (Class A and Class B)
- non-shipborne AIS
- AIS equipment, and
- some benefits and limitations of AIS.
